Jane Capellini believes life is in the details. “An interior should be eclectic and tell the story of the client’s life and personality,” says the principal of Capellini Design Associates, a full-service interior design firm. “It should be a haven where you feel comfortable.” For 30 years Capellini, who studied environmental design at Pratt Institute, has created such places.
Her work includes a horse farm in Pawling, New York; apartments in New York City; and seasonal homes in Watch Hill, Rhode Island; the Hamptons, New York; and Palm Beach, Florida; as well as primary residences in Greenwich, Connecticut, and Westchester County, New York. She’s transformed whole houses and individual rooms, her services ranging from overseeing the design and construction phases to choosing colors and furnishings to decoration and exterior hardscaping. She’s also skilled at staging homes for events and sale.
Although fluent in all styles, Capellini specializes in a timeless transitional take that rests between traditional and modern. Muted hues, textured surfaces, and pops of color mark her projects, as does a quiet riot of patterns. “You are a successful designer if you can mix antiques and newer pieces,” she believes. She keeps calming interiors interesting with sophisticated touches like dressmaker details on the upholstery and draperies made of handkerchief linen. Such details balance practicality and elegance, bringing subtle luxury to everyday living.
Capellini prides herself in making the design process and execution run smoothly. She sees her role as identifying her client’s taste, then refining it through expert choices. Keeping an eye on the budget, she strives to use what clients’ have, then suggests additions, rather than insisting they start from scratch. And, as a mother of two daughters (a teenager and a twenty-something), she understands how to create family-friendly spaces without compromising aesthetics. After all, Capellini’s aim is to create a home that you feel passionate about, and that you love being in each and every day.
